ESSENTIALS: A Two-Year Seminar Course in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy

Empirical evidence supports the efficacy of psychoanalytic psychotherapy.
Moreover, patients who receive psychoanalytic therapy maintain therapeutic gains and often continue to improve after treatment ends. This seminar-based course brings together key concepts and underlying principles of mind, psychopathology and technique to help the mental health clinician deepen skills and expand the range of patients treatable within the scope of clinical practice.
In the space of two years, the participant will become conversant in the modern applications of psychoanalytic theory and therapy within a collegial and interactive environment led by experts in the field.
Why take this course?
Psychoanalytic principles and techniques underlie many modern therapy approaches. Without the broader background, however, the therapist tends to appreciate the limb without understanding the tree.
Hence, if the intention is to work psychodynamically this course will provide an enriching and broadening base to further clinical development for the working professional.
Course content:
Module 1: Theory (30 hours) covers the major contributions of Sigmund Freud, Melanie Klein, Wilfred Bion, Donald Winnicott and the early British Object Relations theorists, American Ego Psychology, Self and Relational Psychologies.
Module 2: Development of Personality (20 hours) explores infant and child development including the development of mind and language, psychosexual and gender development.
Module 3: Psychopathology (22 hours) is devoted to the understanding of psychopathology, and its clinical manifestations, from a psychoanalytic point of view.
Module 4: Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (28 hours) With an appreciation for a psychoanalytic frame of mind, of both patient and therapist, arising from the seminars in the previous three modules, the participant will be ready to address issues particularly applicable to a psychoanalytic treatment. The seminars in this module include an introduction psychoanalytic listening and intervention, an understanding of behavioural enactments, the diagnostic features of regression and developmental arrest, and the distinguishing characteristics of repression and dissociation. Curative factors in psychotherapy and the Field Theory approach to intervention are also included in the module.

Sandor Ferenczi Study Group

SANDOR FERENCZI was a devoted follower of Sigmund Freud and, at one time, the heir apparent to the leadership of the International Psychoanalytic Society. However, for nearly a century, his writings have languished in libraries due to the politics of Freud’s inner circle. In recent years, his brilliant, innovative thinking has been rediscovered and is undergoing a renaissance: his prodigious contribution to modern psychoanalytic and psychotherapeutic thinking is at last being recognized.

Great Article by Dr. Shedler: "Bamboozled by Bad Science", on how so called evidence-based psychotherapy is oversold...
